The User Conduct Policy applies to all interactions on WikiOasis, particularly its official spaces, though it is expected to be followed by member wikis and will be enforced as necessary, especially for severe violations or an extended drama which local management does not resolve.
Principles[edit | edit source]
- Respect for fellow users. Assume good faith of people's intentions if you have no good reason to believe otherwise. If you do have reason, nonetheless communicate this in a civil and respectful way. Personal attacks and insults are not only not appropriate, they do not help resolve problems.
- Think before you act. If you can look up something reasonably on your own before asking a question, it won't hurt to try. Think through your edit, your comment, your options before pressing the save button.
- Ask questions! Regardless if you are a newly registered user or a Steward, you are encouraged to find solutions and gain knowledge. If you've tried and you don't know, please ask. It is better to even, yes, be a little annoying if you need to, than to assume, act incorrectly and clean up the mess.
- Be reasonable. Sometimes we just make mistakes. Some people need more help than others. For administrators and others in sensitive roles, but even just for people passing by, we ask that you be considerate and give room for error. Likewise though, your time is valuable too. If you aren't sure where to draw the line... think it through, if you need to, just ask ;)
This policy speaks in general terms to give room for reasonable conduct even if people may strongly disagree with each other. Ultimately we are looking for constructive behavior moving forward. Behavior which seeks to tear down others and the platform will be responded to strictly. People doing their best to work with others who may have struggles will be given reasonable room for growth.
Prohibited Conduct[edit | edit source]
- Harassment of others. We will not tolerate stalking, threats, derogatory comments, retaliatory behavior and other such activities towards individuals. This includes doxxing which will be given zero tolerance.
- Hate speech. This is using language to stereotype & denigrate groups of people based on social, ethnic, gender or similar human attributes. It is a reasonably common term and definition which we will not use to attack any speech we don't like. Just that which denigrates others.
- Abuses of power. Using your authority over other people to get a leg up regardless of who is right or wrong or any reasonable approach to the situation. Blocking a critic simply for disagreement which is not one of the above issues, or using your position to intimidate someone rather than responding in a civil and orderly way to a problem.
- Illegal advocacy or activity. You may not under any circumstances advocate for or engage in plainly illegal activity. This includes promotion of piracy.
- Abusive reporting. Reports made in good faith will be responded to. Reports to WikiOasis functionaries designed to chill or censure reasonable conduct is not acceptable behavior.
Volunteer Conduct[edit | edit source]
Volunteers are held to the above standards, and more strictly - especially when they have access to tools that grant them 'an edge' or their position makes them looked up to by others in the community. They are expected to maintain the community's trust especially when confided with sensitive information. Violations of this trust will be investigated by Trust and Safety and/or the Executive Team as appropriate.
Off-Platform Conduct[edit | edit source]
WikiOasis cannot police conduct outside of WikiOasis boundaries, but such behavior may be considered when reviewing activity on WikiOasis. Note that officially run WikiOasis satellites such as Discord and Phorge are fully held to this policy.
Local Conduct[edit | edit source]
Wikis may set stricter standards but should not fall below these expectations. WikiOasis does not wish to step on local community standards; a community may have 'spicy' but well-intentioned harmless humor, or a different community may take greater strides to create a safe space for its members. We'd prefer to let them run themselves and for those who are removed or 'only' uncomfortable to find more suitable spaces (we don't like to argue semantics about what causes personal offense). However WikiOasis will intervene with any violations which threaten the local or global communities, and a standard of conduct well below what is described will not be permitted.
Enforcement[edit | edit source]
Generally this policy is enforced by Stewards, with review by Trust and Safety. The Executive Team as a whole reviews as a last line, especially should Trust and Safety themselves be disputed.
