This wiki was first launched in 2021 on Miraheze, following a failed proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation to kick-start a new sister project. At the time, WMF staff politely declined our request but encouraged me to set up the project on Miraheze instead.

The original concept was that this wiki would be used collaboratively by library visitors. People would document their findings about libraries, ranging from “what books exist in a certain library,” to “what facts are contained in a certain book,” to “what libraries exist in a certain city.” The goal was to enrich the experience of library visitors—not just an isolated routine of “come to the library, read, then go home,” but also to share personal research, findings, and communicate with a broader library community within the same library, city, or even nationally and globally.

While participating in discussions about Wikinews migration, someone proposed moving to WikiOasis. I agreed with the proposal because the “secret” discussion between Miraheze and Wikimedia New York had stalled for a very long time, and there seemed to be a lack of transparency. Later, one Miraheze staff member appeared to dislike this idea. We discussed it privately on Discord, but it seemed that he strongly disliked me. At that point, I realized that this conflict might put my project, currently hosted on Miraheze, at risk.

Afterward, I did deeper research to understand why this particular Miraheze staff member was so upset by the mention of “WikiOasis”. It turned out that many Miraheze wikis had been migrating to WikiOasis. Most of them cited certain “problems” as the reason for leaving, but I still don’t fully understand what those issues were.

For now, I think I am going to migrate this project to WikiOasis as well.
