Dovepedia is a free, general-purpose encyclopedia written by volunteers—known as Dovepedians—using collaborative wiki software.

I'm here because I love writing encyclopedic articles. There’s a real need for well-written, simple, and mobile-friendly content that’s easy to update. Dovepedia’s goal is to make that process easier by removing barriers between writers and readers. I'm deeply mindful of my readers’ needs and strive to provide the best experience possible.

The first question most people ask is: why? Why start another wiki when others—like Wikipedia—already exist? What makes Dovepedia different?

I'm a huge fan of Wikipedia and use it regularly. But I believe there’s room for more than one wiki-based encyclopedia. A single large website can become homogenised, while a constellation of smaller sites brings diversity and fresh perspectives to the internet.

I want to create the most readable encyclopedia on the internet—accessible not just to native English speakers, but also to those for whom English is a second language. My writing aims for the clarity found in major newspapers such as The Times, The Guardian, or The Independent.

Thanks for your submission. Unfortunately, our platform doesn’t accept general-purpose encyclopedias that closely resemble Wikipedia in structure and scope. While your goals around accessibility and readability are commendable, we require wiki projects to have a distinct and specialized focus to be considered for approval. Targets general readers and non-native English speakers by writing in clear, plain English, similar to the reading level of The Guardian or The Times.

Focuses on mobile readability and user-friendly formatting, making it ideal for handheld browsing. Many wiki sites aren't truly mobile-optimised—Dovepedia is.

Prioritises original human writing—no AI content, no Wikidata dependencies, no excessive templates.

Welcomes niche topics that would be rejected on Wikipedia. Hobby articles, local interest pages, lesser-known creatives and businesses all have a place here.

Operates under a radically open philosophy, with fewer gatekeeping policies and a friendlier editor environment for hobbyists and casual contributors.

Rather than competing with Wikipedia, Dovepedia complements it by restoring the original wiki spirit—fast, human-readable, and personal.

Our aim is to build a curated yet open space where the joy of writing and reading comes first—not bureaucracy, deletionism, or over-engineering.
