Invalid Discord Invite
The Discord invite link on the Main Page's Contact Us section is invalid. Just a heads up! Metrago (talk) 14:14, 14 December 2024 (UTC)

Trust and Safety groups deprecated
Because of lack of need at this time, WikiOasis Trust and Safety as a team has merged into Stewards. This means I am the 'Trust and Safety Representative', of sorts, but ultimately a Steward by role. Globe is now just Steward.
To refresh on how the farm is run, it is governed by an Executive Team that includes stewards and sysadmins, who respectively handle community and technology affairs on the farm (though membership can and does overlap). There are other possibilities, for example we have some advisors and are willing to work with people who have decent ideas how to push the farm forward (we could always use some energy), and if you have a wiki project you'd like to host we're open to discussing that as well.
Take care all,
--raidarr (📡) 10:30, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
Growth Tools
Heya all, I've enabled the GrowthExperiments extension and set it up here, to allow for new users to connect with a mentor and ask questions they may have to them, along with suggesting tasks such as adding links between mainspace pages and and copyediting. I don't think GrowthExperiments will necessarily be here for a long time, but I'd like to see if it helps with retention and encouraging volunteering here. If anybody is interested in mentoring, and has more than 50 edits and your account is more than 90 days old, go to Special:MentorDashboard to sign up.
Cheers, --zippybonzo (c • ca) 08:23, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

Please help me with importing wiki pages
Good afternoon. I need to upload a wiki from Fandom to my wiki. I downloaded the dump (weighing more than 30 MB), and as a result, I get the error "Import failed:
Session data is lost. You may have completed your work session. Please make sure that you are still logged in and try again. If this still doesn't help, try logging out and logging in again, and make sure that your browser allows you to accept cookies from this site. The interviewee prefix is not specified." What should I do? I followed all the instructions that were there, and the error still appears. PMR (talk) 09:00, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- @PMR Heya, could you send a link to your dump (or create a request at Special:RequestImportDump and I'll look into it later today to see if I can fix it. Thanks :) --zippybonzo (c • ca) 09:54, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Any plans to update MediaWiki software on our wikis to 1.44?
Does WikiOasis plan to update MediaWiki software on our wikis to 1.44 once this version is released? I heard that MediaWiki 1.44 will be released later this month. If so, when? Xeverything11 (talk) 18:41, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- WikiOasis is committed to both having up-to-date software and ensuring our wikis run smoothly and efficiently. We will likely upgrade once the new version is shown to be stable and ready, so an exact date is hard to say, especially when its release date hasn’t even been announced. Globe (talk) 19:08, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hiya, Tech person here. We generally don't immediately upgrade due to stability reasons - last time when 1.43 came out we waited about a month. This is primarily due to the fact we have to wait for core dependencies to update.
- Regardless, we're not going to push out an update that hasn't even been released yet, and we generally don't confirm updates until on the day.

Vladimir Soyfer — Soviet Biophysicist, Historian, and Dissident
Vladimir Dmitrievich Soyfer (born March 9, 1936) is a Soviet and Russian biophysicist, historian of science, human rights activist, and dissident. He is widely recognized for his critical analysis of Soviet biology, particularly his research on Lysenkoism and the political repression of scientists in the USSR.
Early Life and Education
Soyfer was born in Moscow in 1936. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), where he studied molecular biology and biophysics. His early work focused on DNA repair mechanisms and cellular radiation responses.
Scientific Career
During the 1960s and 70s, Soyfer made significant contributions to Soviet biophysics. He published numerous peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals and held senior research positions at Soviet research institutes.
However, his career was disrupted due to his outspoken criticism of scientific fraud, especially surrounding the legacy of Trofim Lysenko, whose pseudoscientific influence had derailed Soviet genetics for decades.
Dissidence and Repression
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Soyfer became involved in the human rights movement in the USSR. He signed petitions, gave interviews to foreign media, and opposed the ideological persecution of scientists and intellectuals.
As a result, he was removed from his academic positions, subjected to surveillance, and faced professional exile. Despite this, he continued to write and publish abroad.
Legacy and Influence
Soyfer is the author of over 200 articles and several books, including:
- Lysenko and the Tragedy of Soviet Science
- The Holocaust and Soviet Policy
- Science, Ideology, and the State
His work is cited in major academic journals across biology, history, and political science. He has been invited to speak at international conferences and has taught at universities abroad.
Recognition
In the post-Soviet era, Soyfer has received recognition for his scientific integrity and efforts to preserve the truth about Soviet science. He has collaborated with institutions in the United States, Israel, and Germany.
Key Themes in Soyfer's Work
- The suppression of genetics in the USSR
- The rise and fall of Lysenkoism
- Political control of science
